It’s been a great summer for cycling in the UK. The mild weather and longer days certainly made for perfect cycling conditions, whether you are a road cyclist or prefer slightly rougher terrain.
Consider the security of your bikes and make sure that you have the right home insurance in place in the event of theft, loss or damage. According to Cycleplan, nearly 400,000 bicycles are stolen each year. What’s more, more than half of all thefts in the UK occur in and around the home, from gardens, sheds and garages. And yet, only 5% of home content’s policies cover bicycles outside of the home as standard.
In fact, with the increasing popularity of expensive models and innovative ways of selling stolen goods online, bicycle theft has doubled in the UK since the mid-1990s. There are many ways you can reduce the chances of your bicycle being lost or stolen.
It only takes seconds for a bicycle to be stolen. Always lock your bicycle using a good quality D-lock whenever you leave it unattended. Most stations, local amenities and public buildings provide secure and well-lit areas for bike storage and it makes sense to use these rather than parking your pride and joy out on the street, or in an isolated place, where it may be more vulnerable.
Always remember to lock away your bike within your property, your shed or your garage for maximum protection. Investing in a ground anchor or wall rack is a great idea as this will allow you to secure your bicycle within your property and make it less of an attractive option to thieves.
Whether you have just invested in a brand new personal road bike or new bikes for family trips, it makes sense to protect that investment.
