Average UK Car Insurance Costs by Age
We are taking a look at the average car insurance costs by age across different age brackets so you have an idea of what you may need to pay for your premiums.

How does age affect car insurance?
Younger drivers are typically less experienced with fewer years of driving under their belt and so are viewed as a higher risk to insurance companies.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are older drivers who pay less for their car insurance because of their years of driving experience and are therefore seen as lower risk.
It’s important to keep in mind that regardless of your age, if you are a brand-new driver having recently passed your test, your car insurance will usually be higher than those who might be in the same age range but have more driving experience.
Age also isn’t the only factor in the cost of insurance. Insurers will also consider the following:
- Vehicle
- Claims history
- Postcode
- Job title
- Annual mileage
- Car modifications
Car insurance cost for younger drivers (17-24)
On average, car insurance for drivers who have just passed their test will be the highest.
However, there are car insurance policies designed for younger drivers to make getting on the road for the first time more accessible. You can also consider adding a named driver with a good driving history to your policy. Choosing a car from a lower insurance group can help make your policy cheaper too.

Car insurance costs for drivers aged 25-29
As you hit 25, car insurance premiums tend to start coming down if you’ve not made a claim. You may have even built up a no claims bonus too.
Car insurance costs for drivers in their 30s and 40s
After the age of 30, insurance premiums tend to reduce more if you’ve been driving since you were young and have gained many years of road experience without making a claim.
Car insurance costs for over 50s
As you might expect, with many years of driving experience under your belt, car insurance premiums for those over 50 tend to be lower than other age groups.
However, this may not always be true for those who have been in road accidents or made any claims on their car insurance policies. Building up a no claims discount over many years of driving can really help to keep your premiums as low as possible.

Ways to save money on your car insurance at any age
Adding a black box to your vehicle: A telematics insurance policy uses a black box to track how you drive. If you can show safe driving, your premiums may be lower the next time you come to renew.
Adding an experienced driver to your policy: This is especially important for younger drivers. If you can add an experienced driver to your policy as a named driver, their good driving history could push down the cost of your insurance.
Paying a higher excess on your policy: This is the amount you pay towards a claim. The higher the excess, the lower the policy. Just make sure you choose an excess you can afford to pay.
Parking your car on a drive or in a locked garage: This can help your car be seen as lower risk as it reduces the chance of theft.
Driving a car in a lower car insurance group: This can help to reduce your premiums as cars in lower insurance groups tend to be cheaper to insure.
