What is the difference between static and touring caravans?

Most caravans can be divided into one of two categories, with different types of caravan insurance for each:

Static caravans

Static caravans are permanent fixtures that are typically installed on a caravan site with other static caravans. They are often hooked-up to facilities like water and electricity, and the caravan site usually has amenities, like shops and cafes.

Touring caravans

Touring caravans are mobile caravans that are towed by a vehicle and are the caravans you see on the road attached behind cars.

Touring caravans are different from motorhomes and are treated as a separate category of vehicle when it comes to insurance. Whereas touring caravans have no cab or engine and can’t be driven, motorhomes are self-contained vehicles that can be both lived in and driven – they also need specialist motorhome insurance.

How much can caravan insurance cost?

The price of caravan insurance can depend on a range of factors including your age, driving history, the type of caravan you want to insure, and your chosen caravan insurance.

On average customers paid £129.54 (Jan-Sept 2024) for static caravans and £144.90 for tourers.

How to improve the cost of caravan insurance?

There are steps you can take to help make your caravan insurance cheaper, including:

  • Improving your caravan’s security: Security features – like door locks, wheel clamps, locks, alarms, and tracking devices – mean your caravan is harder to steal.

  • Using secure storage: Your caravan will be safer if you can store it off the road, in a lockable location, such as a garage or storage unit.

  • Joining a caravan club: Whether the Caravan and Motorhome Club or the Camping and Caravanning Club, this shows your dedication to caravaning and indicates that you’re a safe and sensible caravan owner.

  • Avoiding unnecessary extras: Ensure you get the cover you need, but don’t pay for additional extras that you won’t use.

  • Shopping around for your insurance: You’ll find the cheapest caravan insurance policies by comparing quotes from a range of insurance companies.

Can I get short term caravan insurance?

Yes, plenty of insurance companies offer temporary caravan insurance. Typically, short-term caravan insurance lasts from one day up to 30, making it ideal for short caravan trips. Unfortunately, Asda Money does not currently offer a comparison service for this option yet.

About Caravan Insurance:

Why do I need Caravan Insurance?

While caravan insurance may not be a legal requirement, like car insurance, if you don't have it, you may be left having to pay the full cost of repairing or replacing your caravan yourself.

If you got into an accident on the road where your caravan damaged another car, you'd also have to pay that party’s expenses, as well as your own.

Caravan insurance protects against these unforeseen costs, providing cover against damage in an accident as well as theft or vandalism.

What are the different types of Caravan Insurance?

You have a range of options when it comes to insuring your caravan, depending on what kind of caravan you have and the type of cover you need:

Touring vs static

These are the two main types of caravan insurance. As the names suggest, one is for static, permanently placed caravans, while touring is for caravans that you move around to different sites.

Touring caravan insurance provides cover for a caravan you tow behind a vehicle. It usually protects its contents and equipment, as well as damage to it or other vehicles in an accident. This is different to motorhome insurance, which we also offer.

Static caravan insurance is designed for caravans set-up in a permanent caravan site or holiday park. This type of cover is similar to touring, covering you for the caravan and its contents and equipment.

You can insure your caravan on a new for old or market value basis. Both are slightly different, so it’s important to understand what you’ll get in the event of making a claim.

Trailer tent and folding camper

This type of insurance provides cover for a trailer tent or folding camper that you tow behind your vehicle. It's similar to touring caravan insurance, but has its own specific exclusions. You can find out more in the policy documents.

New for old or market value?

New for old caravan insurance means in the event of a claim where your caravan is damaged beyond repair or irretrievably stolen, you will receive a payout for the value of your caravan when it was new.

Usually, new for old policies are more expensive than market value cover because the cost to providers to replace your caravan is likely to be higher.

Market value caravan insurance means that in the event of a payout from a provider, you will receive the current market value of your caravan, rather than its value when new.
