What is third party fire and theft car insurance?

Third party fire and theft (TPFT) car insurance combines third party only with additional protection against fire and theft. It is one step up from the minimum level of insurance needed to drive a car on UK roads.

Third party fire and theft insurance covers you if you’re involved in an accident where someone else's car or property is damaged, and/or they’re hurt. If they make a claim against you for repairs or replacement, or for their medical costs, your insurance policy will cover it.

It also protects your own car against damage caused by fire, and losses caused by theft. However, it won’t cover your car and property, or your medical costs, if you cause an accident.

Advantages of choosing third party fire and theft car insurance

Third party fire and theft insurance means that:

  • You’ll be covered against compensation claims made against you for damage, losses or injuries experienced by third parties.

  • You’ll have more than the minimum required level of insurance to legally drive in the UK.

  • You'll be covered for the cost of repairing or replacing your car if it's damaged by fire or by theft.

Loss or damage from theft

Your policy will also cover the loss or damage to your car from theft, with most insurers replacing your car on your behalf. This may also cover any parts of your car stolen during the theft.

Most insurers will also cover you for vandalism or damage from an attempted theft.

Third party fire and theft (TPFT) is a type of car insurance policy. If you’re in an accident, third party fire and theft insurance covers you for compensation claims made against you– these could be for repairing or replacing the other person’s car or property, or for their medical expenses. It also covers you for losses and damage to your own car and property caused by theft or fire.

Should I get third party fire and theft car insurance?

Third party, fire and theft car insurance policies offer more protection than the minimum required by law, covering you for third-party claims, as well as damage or theft of your own car due to fire or theft. It could be a great option if you want additional coverage beyond basic third-party insurance.

Is third party fire and theft car insurance cheaper than comprehensive?

Although third party fire and theft offers a lower level of cover compared with comprehensive, it’s not always cheaper. Insurers base the cost of car insurance on risk factors, so the amount you pay for your car insurance will vary according to your circumstances.

Who should consider third party fire and theft insurance?

You may consider third party fire and theft car insurance if it’s affordable for you and offers you the level of cover you need.
