History of Labradoodles

The Labradoodle breed originated in Australia and is a Labrador and Poodle hybrid. Labradoodles combine the intelligence of the Poodle and the aesthetic and temperament of the lovable Labrador resulting in a charming dog that has a teddy bear like appearance. This breed can be traced back to the 1980s and was created with the sole aim of creating an allergy -friendly version of a Labrador. Originally bred as gundogs, today the Labradoodle is a kind a caring companion that is well suited to both experienced dog owners and confident first-time dog owners.

What to expect when caring for your Labradoodle

Labradoodles, although generally healthy, can be prone to the same health conditions that Poodles and Labradors are prone to including:

Bloat – Common in large breeds, this issue occurs when the stomach twists blocking the blood supply.

Exercise Induced Collapse – If your pet can tolerate mild to moderate exercise but collapses after 5 to 15 minutes of strenuous exercise, Exercise Induced Collapse is to blame. Avoiding strenuous exercise is the only remedy for this.

Von Willebrand Disease - This is a bleeding disorder that is inherited from the Poodle parent. The blood doesn’t clot efficiently and is caused due to a protein deficiency called Von Willebrand.

  1. Labradoodle Personality Traits

What to expect from your Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a playful dog that loves games. Unlike other breeds, they keep their puppy-like curiosity and fun-loving nature well into adulthood. It is this child-like playfulness that makes them one of the nation’s most loved dog breeds. Labradoodles come in various colours with the most popular being chocolate, black and yellow. Every labradoodle is unique, but most have a kind and gentle temperament.

  2. Are Labradoodles Family Friendly?

How will they behave around my family?

Yes, Labradoodles are a superb family pet due to the breed’s famously gentle and affectionate personality. They get on well with children and other pets, but their large size can sometimes be problematic. An excitable Labradoodle combined with a small toddler for example could be a recipe for disaster.
