History of Poodle Dogs 

The Poodle breed can be traced back to Germany in the 15th century where it was originally bred to be a sporting dog because of its ability to hunt and swim. One of the most recognised breeds in the world, the Poodle falls into the working dog category and is universally adored for its elegance and grace. Today the standard Poodle make loyal companions for dog lovers. There are three different types of Poodle: standard, toy and miniature.

Glaucoma – An eye issue this breed is particularly susceptible to is Glaucoma. Resulting from a build-up of fluid, this is a hereditary issue that can’t be cured but can be managed with medication.

Addison’s Disease – Poodles are predisposed to this condition which affects the adrenal glands. The cause for this disease is still unknown.

Hip Dysplasia – Hip Dysplasia in Poodles causes arthritic changes over time as a result of the hip joint growing incorrectly.

How Much Grooming Do Poodles Need?

Poodles either have a corded or a curly coat which comes in many colours. This breed is fairly high maintenance when it comes to grooming and the coat will need to be clipped every 6 weeks and many owners tend to seek assistance from a professional groomer. This is a light-shedding breed and is considered excellent for allergy sufferers.

How Much Exercise Do Poodles Need?

Poodles are exuberant dogs that like to romp around and as a result, need regular play sessions and walks with their owner or a dog walker. Poodles love the water and are strong swimmers and this can be a great way for them to burn off any pent-up energy. A 60-minute walk per day is sufficient for this breed. Due to the intelligence of this breed, mental stimulation is important and therefore it is advisable to mix up your walks and vary the location so your pooch doesn’t get bored of the same route.
