History of Rottweiler Dogs

The Rottweiler breed has taken on many roles throughout history and was originally bred with the purpose of pulling carts and herding cattle. A working dog, the Rottweiler went on to protect livestock and became one of the earliest police dogs and later established itself as a superb addition to search and rescue teams. Contrary to popular belief, this breed originated in Rome not Germany, with traces of the breed going all the way back to 73 AD. Today, Rottweilers are affectionate and loyal house pets adored for their calm yet confident persona.

What to expect when caring for your Rottweiler

Common Rottweiler Health Issues

As a Rottweiler owner, are there any common health issues to look out for?

Hip Dysplasia - This condition is a result of the hip joints slipping out of place and can result in arthritis.

Gastric Dilatation Volvulus – This is a condition that affects the stomach and is a common problem among large dog breeds like the Rottweiler. Also called Bloat, this is a potentially life-threatening condition that is caused by the stomach twisting and blocking the blood supply.

How Much Grooming Do Rottweilers Need?

This breed has a recognisable short and glossy waterproof black and tan coat that falls into the high shedding category. While weekly bathing is not required, weekly brushing is advised for the Rottweiler’s double coat to keep the shedding under control, especially in the summer months.

How Much Exercise Do Rottweilers Need?

Rottweilers were bred to be working dogs and excelled at herding livestock so you can bet that this dog needs sufficient mental and physical stimulation. This means you should expect to exercise your pet for around an hour each day. Rottweilers are athletic dogs so don’t be afraid to mix it up and add variety to their lifestyle. They love to be in water so take them swimming to help them burn off that excess energy.

  1. Rottweiler Personality Traits

What to expect from your Rottweiler

Rottweilers are known for being large, muscular and powerful dogs and their connection to police work has earned them an unfair reputation for being aggressive. While Rottweilers can appear intimidating, (they can be standoffish with strangers) when trained and socialised from an early age they make affectionate and loving pets. Their calm and caring nature is why this breed makes a superb therapy dog. As a result, those looking for both a companion and an endearing guard dog will find exactly that in this breed.

  2. Are Rottweilers Family Friendly?

How will they behave around my family?

Rottweilers are a good fit for a family home but will need to be trained and socialised from a young age. They make great playmates for kids but are not overly keen on strangers so will need to be supervised when your children have friends over for example. This is a large and cumbersome breed that should be supervised around small children as when giddy could accidentally knock over a child.

They are eager to please and tend to learn commands quicker than other breeds.

How Much Are Rottweiler Puppies?

A fully grown Rottweiler weighs between 36 and 61kg. Keep in mind that the weight of a Rottweiler will differ depending on whether you choose a male or a female puppy.
