Travel Insurance for Couples

Travelling together with the right cover

Going travelling with a partner can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, packed with new adventures and experiences. As with any sort of trip away, you’ll need to make sure you have the proper protection for your trip.

If you are planning on going away as a couple, you can take advantage of joint travel insurance, also known as couples travel insurance policies or couples travel cover, allowing you to be insured together and save some money.

What does couple mean in travel insurance?

Couples travel insurance relates to two adults who are over the age of 18 who are registered as living at the same address and are in a relationship. This can mean a married couple or simply a couple in a relationship who are co-habiting together.

Typically, you can expect standard couples travel insurance to include everything you’d find in a standard travel insurance policy, including:

  • Medical cover
  • Cover for personal belongings
  • Cancellation cover
  • Travel delay/disruption cover

We also include cover for over 50 different sports and activities as standard if you’re planning a more extreme getaway skiing down a mountain or taking part in water-based sports.

Is couple’s insurance cheaper?

By taking out a travel insurance policy together, you will typically be able to save money when compared with taking out two separate travel insurance policies.

However, if one of you has a pre-existing medical condition, it might be cheaper to take out separate policies as the cheaper policy can offset the slightly higher cost of the other. As a claim on your joint policy could see the premiums rise for both of you, getting two separate policies can sometimes be beneficial.

The other thing to consider is that, with joint travel insurance, some cover limits will be split between the two of you. That means if both your belongings go missing, rather than having £1,000 to cover the cost of replacing those items you’ll have to split it – meaning there’d only be £500 each. The best way to avoid this is to make sure the cover limits within your policy are enough to cover both of you completely for your trip.

Can you travel separately on couple travel insurance?

Some couples travel insurance policies can allow for separate travel at certain points, meaning you can part ways mid-way through if one of you is continuing on to another destination.

This can also be useful with annual couples travel insurance as it can help if you’re planning on visiting friends or family overseas on a regular basis but can’t always guarantee that you can go together.

Is medical cover included with couple’s travel insurance?

Just like with a standard travel policy, we’ll take any pre-existing conditions into consideration provided you tell us at the time of organising your cover.

There may be a small extra charge in order to cover some conditions, but if something were to happen you need not worry – we’ll have your back.

If you’re a couple looking to travel together then be sure to book your insurance at the same time as your trip to make the most of your cover. Why not get a quote with us and see how much you could save by getting a joint travel insurance policy?
