Asda Money offers breakdown cover via our trusted partner LV= Britannia Rescue. You can choose from three levels of cover: Roadside cover, UK breakdown cover, and European breakdown cover. Roadside cover only covers cars up to 10 years old. But both UK breakdown cover and European breakdown cover are available for older and classic cars.

What is Classic Car Breakdown Cover?

Breakdown cover for classic cars is an insurance policy that provides roadside assistance for older cars in the event of a breakdown. Most insurers will offer breakdown policies that cover older cars rather than a tailored classic car breakdown policy.

Some insurance providers limit their coverage to cars that are 10 years old, while others will cover cars that are over 20 years old.

Levels of Classic Car Breakdown Cover

You can choose different levels of breakdown cover to protect your older car. All policies include roadside assistance as standard, but you can add other options, such as:

  • National recovery: If your car can’t be repaired by the side of the road, it will be towed anywhere in the UK. This could be a garage, your home, or your destination.

  • European breakdown cover: Provides you with cover if you want to drive your older car on the continent. Some policies will exclude certain European countries, so make sure you check which are in included in your policy.

  • Home start: Covers your classic car if it won’t start at home or nearby. It will either be fixed there and then or towed to a nearby garage.

  • Onward journey cover: If your car can’t be fixed at the side of the road or a garage on the same day, onward journey cover gets you where you need to be. It usually includes a hire car or alternative transport. Some policies allow you to opt for overnight accommodation while your car is fixed.

Personal vs. Vehicle Cover

Consider personal vs. vehicle cover when it comes to choosing the right breakdown policy for older cars.

Personal breakdown cover

This provides cover for you as a named driver for any vehicle. It’s particularly useful if your older car isn’t your day-to-day vehicle and you want to cover both cars on the same policy.

Vehicle breakdown cover

With vehicle breakdown cover, the specific car is covered and not the driver. This is a great option if you’re not the only person who drives your car.

At Asda Money, our European breakdown cover means you’ll benefit from a 24-hour English-speaking emergency phone number to help you out as soon as you break down. It also includes onward travel costs, vehicle repatriation, and garage labour costs.

Classic Car Breakdown Cover FAQs

Can you get breakdown cover on an old car?

Yes, you can get breakdown cover on an older car. Often it depends on the insurance provider and level of cover you choose. At Asda Money, our lowest level of breakdown cover (Roadside cover) only covers cars aged up to 10 years. However, our UK breakdown cover and European breakdown cover provide cover for older and classic cars.

How old is a car to be considered classic?

There is no official definition as to the age when a car becomes classic for the purposes of insurance. But for tax purposes, HMRC will consider a car to be classic when it’s over 15 years old with a market value greater than the list price and a minimum of £15,000.
