Dog

French bulldogs can be prone to certain health conditions such as respiratory and skin issues, so having the right dog insurance in place can help make sure your Frenchie’s health is protected for the future.

Common French Bulldog health issues

Owning a French Bulldog doesn’t mean they will experience any of the following, but these are some of the potential health conditions French Bulldogs can be prone to:

Respiratory Problems

As French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed it can cause respiratory issues.

(BOAS) brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome can lead to heavy breathing, snoring and sometimes can cause severe respiratory issues resulting in the dog needing surgery.

Ear Disorders

This breed has particularly narrow ear canals that can be prone to ear infections. The body’s natural defence is to produce more ear wax than usual to try to prevent an ear infection, but this can cause issues with the ear canals becoming blocked.

Skin Problems

Allergies are something you may encounter as a French Bulldog owner. You may also have to navigate a problem called lip-fold pyoderma which is a common skin infection that these dogs often encounter.

Intervertebral disc disease

Your French Bulldog may encounter back issues, with one of most common being intervertebral disc disease. An operation will be needed to correct this.

Is a French Bulldog the right pet for you?

French Bulldogs make great family pets. They love being around people but can sometimes get separation anxiety from their owners so it’s important to make sure you take this into consideration before committing to one.

Another thing to consider is the fact they are a flat-nosed breed, this means they could have higher healthcare costs – which makes it important to have the right level of insurance cover in place.

Caring for your French Bulldog

How often should you feed a Frenchie?

Feeding your Frenchie the right nutritious food is important to keep them healthy. Pups should be fed 3-4 times a day and adults twice a day.

How much grooming do French Bulldogs need?

This breed need brushing once a week and bathing every month to keep their skin healthy and clean. Their face will need to be cleaned daily to ensure the folds around the face are kept clean.

Nail trimming must be done every month to stop them growing too long.

How Much Exercise do French Bulldogs Need?

Although small in size, they need one hour of exercise a day, which should be split into shorter multiple walks.

Because they are a brachycephalic breed, they can have difficulty breathing if overexercised.

Be careful in summer when the weather is hot as they can potentially overheat.

Are French Bulldogs easy to train?

French Bulldogs are very intelligent dogs and eager to please, so with plenty of practice and motivation (lots of treats!) you can easily train them to be well behaved dogs. They do have a stubborn streak so it’s important to be consistent and patient with them. You’ll also want to make training fun too, so you get their full co-operation.

What’s the temperament of a French Bulldog like?

French Bulldogs are affectionate, playful and intelligent. Originally bred as companion dogs they adore being around people, making them great family pets.

Do French Bulldogs bark a lot?

This breed isn’t very vocal, which is one of the many reasons why they are so popular as house pets. If a Frenchie does bark, it will have been provoked by something, for example, if there is a knock on the door.

Are French Bulldogs good with children?

Yes, French Bulldogs are ideal for families of all sizes and children of all ages as they are typically non-aggressive. They love attention and being around people, and in general are patient and affectionate with people and other dogs.

Are French Bulldogs good with other dogs?

This breed of dog rarely shows aggression towards other dogs and usually approaches other canines in a playful and sociable manner.

French Bulldog Insurance FAQs:

Do I need a specialist insurance policy for French Bulldogs?

No, you don’t need specialist insurance for French Bulldogs. You can insure them with a standard pet insurance policy, but your premiums will likely be higher due to the fact they are more susceptible to certain illnesses and conditions in later life.

Why are French Bulldogs expensive to insure?

As they are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, they can be more prone to certain health issues such as respiratory problems. This can push up the cost of your pet insurance premiums.

Does pet insurance for French Bulldogs include nose surgery?

Pet insurance usually won’t cover nose surgery for French Bulldogs. This will only ever be the case if a vet deems it necessary to save their life or treat a potentially serious condition. You might find that some insurers offer plans that account for French Bulldog’s specific health needs – this can include corrective surgery for BOAS. Check your policy thoroughly to understand what is and isn’t covered.

Should I choose Lifetime cover or Time Limited pet insurance for a French Bulldog?

Lifetime cover provides ongoing protection for chronic or recurring conditions, with a yearly vet fee limit (up to £10,000 with Asda Money). Time Limited policies offer a fixed amount per conditions, usually over a 12-month period.
