History of Pomeranian Dogs

Pomeranians have an interesting history that can be traced back to before the 19th century. Back then, Pomeranians originated in Europe in the Provence of Pomerania and were much larger than they are today, weighing around 13kg. They were bred to pull sleds and their ancestors were large sled dogs. Over the years, this breed has been used as hearing assistance dogs and  therapy dogs. This breed became popular with royalty and Queen Victoria is responsible for the tiny fluff ball of a dog we associate with the Pomeranian breed today. One of the smallest breeds, Pomeranians weigh between 1 and 3Kg and are popular companion dogs adored for their dainty appearance and extroverted attitude.

What to expect when caring for your Pomeranian

Common Pomeranian Health Issues

If you welcome a Pomeranian into your home, what type of health concerns are connected to the breed that you should be aware of?

Respiratory Disorders – A common health issue connected with this breed is respiratory disorders such as Tracheal Collapse. This affects the main airway and occurs when the cartilage starts to break down or weaken. This makes it hard for air to get to the lungs.

Patella Luxation – This condition affects the knee caps and causes them to slip out of place which can cause your pet severe pain. Signs your dog is experiencing this can include limping or temporary lameness.

Skin Allergies – This breed is prone to skin problems that result from allergies. Signs of this include hair loss and itchy spots appearing on their skin.

How Much Grooming Do Pomeranians Need?

Despite their fluffy appearance, Pomeranians require minimal grooming but they do require daily brushing to keep their mane in tip-top condition. A bath every other month is just what the doctor ordered in terms of keeping odours at bay.

How Much Exercise Do Pomeranians Need?

Pomeranians are descendants of sled pulling Huskies and although they are small, they are naturally a high energy breed. 30 minutes of exercise broken up into two 15-minute walks will be enough to keep your Pomeranian healthy and happy. Exploring a secure garden in between walks also helps them burn off any excess energy. If this breed doesn’t find a way to get rid of any pent up energy they will find ways to demand your attention. An agility program is a great way to keep your pet mentally stimulated.

  1. Pomeranian Personality Traits

What to expect from your Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a tiny dog with a huge personality and their playful nature means they always like to take centre stage. Their instantly recognisable fox-like appearance and the lion-esque mane give them a cute and cuddly look but behind this exterior is a feisty character. They are protective over their families and make superb watchdogs despite their size. It is essential to train them to stop barking on demand as while they make great watchdogs, you may not be over the moon with how vocal they are about it.

  2. Are Pomeranians Family Friendly?

How will they behave around my family?

Pomeranians are a tiny dog that falls into the toy dog category and as a result, they can be quite fragile and don’t respond well to being teased by young children. For this reason, a Pomeranian is best suited to a child-free home or a home with older children.
