What is a travel money card?

A travel money card is a convenient, hassle-free way to spend money while on holiday. You can pre-load your currency onto the card to pay directly at local shops or withdraw cash from ATMs without extra fees. If you’re visiting multiple countries, you can even load several currencies onto one card.

Because it’s pre-paid, it can help you budget your holiday spending and avoid going over your limits. Plus, you can top up it up anytime, whether you’re relaxing on the beach or enjoying a night out.

What is the best travel money card?

There are many travel currency cards available, so it’s important to consider factors like exchange rates, ease of use, and convenience.

For example, the Asda Travel Money Card lets you order online and pick up your card while doing your weekly shop. It offers competitive exchange rates and can be used for contactless payments in multiple countries worldwide, wherever MastercardTM is accepted.

  • Always choose local currency - When given the option, opt to pay in the local currency to avoid extra charges.

  • Have a plan B - Carry some cash as a backup in case your card is lost or stolen.

  • Monitor your travel budget – Keep an eye on your card balance through the app and top-up when you need to.

  • Avoid payment holds - Try not to use your card for hotel deposits, car rentals, automated fuel pumps, or toll booths, as these can temporarily reduce your available balance.
