Top tips on using your card

  • Use contactless worldwide - Tap and pay globally anywhere you see the contactless sign (please note: transaction limits are subject to change and different transaction limits will apply in different countries).
  • Always choose local currency - When given the option, always choose to pay in the local currency.
  • Have a plan B - Take some cash as a back-up option in case your card is lost or stolen.
  • Monitor your travel budget - Check your card balance in the app and top-up when you need to.
  • Avoid payment holds - Avoid using the card for hotel deposits, car rentals, automated fuel pumps or toll booths as this can temporarily reduce the available balance.

Top Currency Card FAQs:

What is the best travel money card?

There are many different currency cards available, but the Asda Travel Money Card offers the convenience of being able to order online and pick up while you’re getting your weekly shop. It offers safety and convenience over carrying cash or your bank cards while you’re on holiday, and you can top up on the go online or via the app.

Are travel money cards worth it?

Travel money cards offer safe and convenient ways to spend while you’re on holiday. As you load up your card with your chosen currency, you don’t need to worry about converting the costs as you go or paying fees on purchases. Using your normal bank card can mean paying fees on each purchase in shops or restaurants.

What are the disadvantages of prepaid travel cards?

A pre-paid travel card usage won't be taken into account for a credit history if you are trying to improve it.

Do you get charged for using a travel money card?

No, once you load currency onto your card, you’re not charged for paying directly with your card or withdrawing cash from the ATM. You may be charged if you pay in a currency that’s not available on your card. For the full list of fees see this link.

How do I activate my travel money card?

Your Travel Money Card is activated as soon as you pick it up in-store. If you ordered one online, you’ll need to activate it by calling the number on the card. The number is 0800 260 0355 or +44 203 284 8395 (from abroad).

Do you need ID for a travel card?

When you buy an Asda Travel Money Card, if you’re collecting at a travel money bureau, you’ll need to show the payment card you used to place the order and a valid photo ID - either a valid passport, full UK photographic driving licence (we do not accept provisional driving licences) or National ID Card - EEA member states and Switzerland which matches the cardholder’s details.

For home delivery orders, a signature will be required on delivery.

Which prepaid card is best for international travel?

The Asda Travel Money Card is perfect for international travel, as you can load it up with your chosen currency and top up as you go. You won’t have to pay any fees on purchases in shops or restaurants as you do with most bank cards when you spend in a currency loaded on the card, and you don’t have to worry about your bank details being stolen if you lose your card.

How does my travel money card work?

Just like any other payment card. You can use it to pay for goods and services all over the world - wherever Mastercard Prepaid is accepted.
