Can over 80s get travel insurance?

Yes, you can get travel insurance for over 80s. Different providers have different maximum age limits for travel insurance – some will stop at 65 and others will insure older people. There are also specialist travel insurers for older travellers, but it’s not always necessary to go for this type of policy.

At Asda Money, we have no upper age limit for our travel insurance, so our policies can cover you if you’re over 80 and beyond.

When you apply for a policy, you’ll need to tell us about any pre-existing medical conditions and complete a quick medical screening. Different medical conditions may cost you more to cover, but it’s important that everything is included. During your policy term, you’ll also need to let us know about any health changes to make sure you’re still fully covered.

What does over 80s travel insurance cover?

While not a specialist policy type, a typical insurance policy for someone over 80 should include:

Travel insurance for over 80s will usually cover:

  • Cancelled flights and missed connections: if you miss a flight or connection for reasons out of your control, you’ll likely be covered for the cost of purchasing a new ticket.
  • Medical care: cover for any medical bills or healthcare if you fall ill or are injured on holiday.
  • Repatriation: the cost of a flight to get back home in a medical emergency.
  • Luggage damage and stolen possessions: if your luggage was damaged or lost in transit you can claim for the cost of replacing it. You can also claim for stolen possessions when it wasn’t your fault.
  • COVID-19: you should be covered for all or some of the expenses of being too sick to travel.
  • Missing passport or travel documents: the cost of replacing any documents – some insurers will also cover the cost of accommodation whilst you wait for the replacements.
  • Personal liability: to cover the cost of legal fees if you damage property or hurt someone in an accident that wasn’t your fault.

What isn’t covered?

You likely won’t be covered for:

  • Undeclared medical conditions: if you don’t declare a medical condition and then claim for it, it can invalidate your insurance.
  • Some sports and activities: this includes things like skiing and water sports, but also sometimes golfing holidays.
  • Leaving belongings unattended: if something is stolen that you left unattended, you won’t be able to claim.
  • Reckless behaviour: including damage to a hire car or property from reckless driving or when drunk.
  • Changing your trip: if you simply choose to cancel or change your holiday plans, you won’t be able to claim the cost.

How much does over 80s cover cost?

Types of travel insurance for over 80s

Some insurers offer specialist policies for older travellers, but this type of policy isn’t always necessary. At Asda Money, our travel insurance has no age limit, so we can insure you no matter your age. If you’re only planning on going abroad once, single trip is likely the cheaper option. But if you’re planning a number of trips throughout the year, annual cover might be more cost-effective.

Where in the world can I travel with over 80s cover?

You can go almost anywhere you like with over 80s travel insurance. But you do need to choose the right policy for your destination.

  • Europe: a Europe specific insurance policy will cover you for a trip to any country in the EU.
  • Worldwide: if you’re planning on travelling outside of the EU, you’ll need worldwide cover. You can choose a policy that either includes or excludes the USA, Canada or the Caribbean.
  • UK: for trips within Britain, UK specific travel insurance will make sure you’re covered. It will also keep your costs down compared to Europe specific policies.

If you travel to any destination or region that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office advises against, you won’t be covered by your insurance.

What medical conditions do you need to disclose for travel insurance?

When you apply for travel insurance you need to disclose any illness, injury or disability that affects your health or wellbeing. It counts as a pre-existing medical condition if you had it either before or at the time of taking out the travel insurance policy.
