Dog DNA Test Costs
Just as a home DNA test can reveal your own family tree and ancestry, you can also buy DNA tests for dogs to uncover their heritage and breed. A dog DNA test can also give you important insights into your four-legged friend’s health and any diseases it may be more likely to develop.
Here, we’ll look at what dog DNA tests involve, what they can tell you, and how much they cost.

What are dog DNA tests?
DNA is the genetic code that every living thing has. Think of DNA as the instructions that tell our bodies how to grow and how to work.
Specific parts of DNA control different processes in the body. Changes in these parts can make your dog more likely to develop certain health conditions, have sensitivities to medicines or even increase the chances they’ll have certain behaviours. By testing your dog’s DNA, you can get a better insight into your pup’s health.
Dogs, just like humans, get half of their DNA from each of their parents. A dog DNA test can therefore help reveal your dog’s family tree, including the breeds your dog is made up of.
How much do dog DNA tests cost?
A variety of different DNA test kits are available in Britain, and the cost will vary depending on the kit you buy and the level of analysis you want. The cost of a dog DNA test in the UK can be anywhere from £40 to over £200, depending on what you want to find out about your pup.
- Dog intolerance kits: the least expensive dog DNA test kits can reveal whether your dog has certain food or environmental intolerances or allergies, like salmon, eggs or lactose.
- Breed discovery kits: dog breed DNA test kits reveal what breeds your dog is made up of, usually giving you a percentage of each breed identified.
- Dog DNA health kits: these can reveal whether your dog is more likely to develop a medical condition and if they have sensitivities to any medications.
- Comprehensive dog DNA test kits: all-inclusive test kits will do all the above, revealing intolerances and allergies, the chances of developing medical conditions, the breed of your dog, and its relatives.
How do dog DNA tests work?
Although you can buy dog DNA test kits from a variety of companies, they all work in a similar way.
Testing your dog’s DNA typically goes like this:
- Order your kit online: you can buy a dog DNA testing kit directly from the company that makes it
- Set up your account: you usually need to register an account where you’ll see your dog’s DNA test results reported.
- Swab your dog's inner cheek with the sample stick provided: the cotton tip of the sample stick will absorb some of your dog's saliva, which the company's laboratory will then use to extract a sample of your dog's DNA.
- Return the sample: secure the sample as directed and then send it back to the company.
- Receive your dog’s results: the company will usually have the results ready within a month, often two to three weeks. They may be posted to you physically, but more often they’ll be posted to your secure online account.
This process applies to most kits but always read the instructions carefully for the dog DNA test you’ve bought to make sure you use it correctly.
What can DNA tests for dogs tell us?
A dog DNA test can tell us many of the same things that a DNA test for people can, like your dog’s parents, their breed and whether they have any genetic health conditions or other predispositions.
Breed
Many people buy dog DNA tests to learn more about their four-legged friend’s ancestry.
While we often have a good idea of what breed or breeds our dogs are based on their appearance and behaviour, a DNA test offers more certainty.
With the DNA sequences of over 350 dog breeds now identified, your dog’s DNA can be tested against each of them. The results are typically displayed as a percentage, showing the different breeds your dog is made up of and how much of each.
Health
By having your dog’s DNA analysed, you could find out if they have a higher chance of developing certain conditions, such as bladder stones, hip dysplasia, heart problems, and some cancers. And whilst they may not develop that condition for certain, DNA testing can make you aware of it and help you know what symptoms to look out for.

Genetic mutations
A genetic mutation refers to a change in a section of DNA that is relatively unique. Some genetic mutations can impact how your dog’s body functions, increasing the risk of health issues, sensitivities to certain medications, food intolerances, allergies, and even certain behaviours, like overeating.
Relatives
Just as DNA analysis can reveal the parents and relatives of humans, a dog DNA test can do the same for your pup.
If other dogs related to yours have also been DNA tested, you can find your dog’s parents and other relatives. Some testing companies can even help you connect with the owners of these dogs.
