History of Cavapoos

One of the first designer dog breeds, Cavapoos are the result of mixing a Poodle with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This breed originated in Australia and was created because of its hypoallergenic qualities as a pet that would be well suited to allergy sufferers. Of course, mixing the intelligence of the Poodle with the outgoing nature of the Spaniel was an added bonus. This breed sprung onto the scene in the late 1990s and has boomed in popularity ever since, due to its adorable appearance and heart-warming personality.

What to expect when caring for your Cavapoo

Common Cavapoo Health Issues

Cavapoos are generally healthy dogs, but like all hybrid breeds, they can be prone to a few health conditions that every Cavapoo owner should know about:

Mitral Valve Disease – One of the most fatal diseases that the Cavapoo breed is prone to, it occurs when the heart valve is weakened over time which causes the heart to stop pumping blood away from the heart and instead directs the blood flow back towards it.

Hip Dysplasia – Inherited from the Poodle parent, hip dysplasia is common in Cavapoos. Stiffness in the joints and an inability to jump is the first sign of this condition.

Eye Diseases - Eye diseases stem from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and include progressive retinal atrophy, entropion, cataracts and glaucoma.

How Much Grooming do Cavapoos Need?

Cavapoos are part Poodle, so naturally, they have a curly coat that needs regular maintenance to keep it under control. Invest in a two-sided pin and bristle brush to keep your pet’s coat tangle-free and in tip-top condition in-between grooming appointments, and regularly check for tear stains that you can remove manually with a wet cotton pad. Professional grooming is beneficial for Cavapoo owners who want to keep the hair around the face neat and tidy.

How Much Exercise Do Cavapoos Need?

This breed falls into the small dog category but don’t let that fool you. Cavapoos are seriously high energy and require a minimum of 40 minutes of exercise per day. You can separate this into two separate walks to give your dog a chance to use up some of that energy and remember to have plenty of toys at home to keep your pooch mentally stimulated. This breed is particularly partial to a game of fetch or tug of war.

Cavapoo FAQs:

How Big Will a Cavapoo Get?

If you are contemplating bringing a Cavapoo into your home, you may be wondering how big your dog will be when it’s fully grown. This depends on a number of factors, including whether you have a male or a female dog (male Cavapoos are slightly larger than females) and, of course, the size of the parents. Cavapoos are small dogs and will grow to a maximum of 35cm.

Do Cavapoos Smell?

As well as being a low shedding pet, Cavapoos are also a low odour breed, and this is in fact, one of the reasons they are so popular as pets. If you notice your Cavapoo is giving off an odour, it could be down to a skin problem and should be investigated further as this is out of the ordinary. Seek advice from your local vet if the odour persists after bathing.

Do Cavapoos Make Good Pets?

Cavapoos are an adorable breed that thrives off human interaction and as a result, make superb pets. Amazingly adaptable, this dog is just as well suited to apartment-style living as it is to a sprawling farmhouse.
