History of The Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is one of the world’s oldest breeds and started out as working dogs originating in China. Chow Chows have played a number of roles throughout history, including guard dogs, watchdogs (the instinct to protect comes naturally to this breed) and hunting dogs. But now, they are adored as loving house pets for their loyalty and notoriety for being one of the cleanest breeds around.

What to expect when caring for your Chow Chow

Common Chow Chow Health Issues

So, are there any health concerns to look out for when welcoming a Chow Chow into your home?

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia – This condition occurs when the hip or elbow joints don’t connect properly causing arthritis over time.

Bloat – This is a condition that can be fatal if not treated immediately and happens when the stomach bloats and twists cutting off blood supply to the organs.

Entropion – This is a common eye issue that Chow Chows are prone to which causes the eyelid to roll inwards, causing irritation and pain.

How Much Grooming do Chow Chows Need?

Like all dogs, the Chow Chow requires regular nail cutting as well as regular teeth and ear cleaning. They also have folds of skin around the neck which need to be kept meticulously clean. The coat of a Chow Chow can vary from rough to smooth so the grooming needs of your pet will depend on this. They shed heavily so require extra maintenance during moulting season. If you have a smooth-coated Chow Chow, you should brush them weekly, but a rough-coated dog will require brushing every other day so be sure to invest in a high-quality dog brush to use in between professional grooming to keep your pet’s coat in good condition and prevent matting.

How Much Exercise Do Chow Chows Need?

What kind of exercise regime can you expect to take on when you own a Chow Chow? Daily walks will keep this pooch happy and while they aren’t considered the most high-energy breed, they require between 30 and 60 minutes of exercise per day. A couple of brief walks is all that is needed to satisfy this breed, as well as moderate off the lead playtime. A small garden is ideal for outdoor breaks and training.

  1. Chow Chow Personality Traits

What to expect from your Chow Chow

The Chow Chow breed is a unique one and not just because of its distinct appearance. Yes, there is no mistaking the Chow Chow’s lion’s mane, stiff walk, and blue-black tongue, but this breed’s temperament is just as unique as its look. This breed is laid-back and low-maintenance and less eager to please than some others. That being said, Chow Chows love company and are well suited to owners who are home a lot and have time to give. They are friendly to other dogs as long as they have been socialised well from an early age.

  2. Are Chow Chow Dogs Family Friendly?

How will they behave around my family?

Chow Chows are not known for being social creatures and are not overly friendly with people they aren’t familiar with, despite their cuddly teddy bear-like appearance. This makes them great guard dogs, but are they well suited to a family home? The answer is yes and no. While the Chow Chow can be cold with strangers, they are fiercely loyal and protective of their owners and usually form a strong bond with one member of the household. For this reason, an adult-only home is the best environment for a happy Chow Chow. They thrive on human companionship and become unhappy if left alone for long periods of time.

Chow Chow FAQs:

Is the Chow Chow Breed Good for Novice Dog Owners?

Chow Chows are stubborn dogs that are challenging to care for as a first-time dog owner. That being said, with the right training, they can be a great pet for an owner who has in-depth knowledge of the breed.

Are Chow Chow Dogs Lazy?

Yes, Chow Chow dogs are certainly less playful than other breeds and aren’t as active as other dogs. They tend to be partial to laying around the house and are known to sleep for up to 14 hours per day.

Are Chow Chows Cuddly?

Chow Chow dogs are fiercely independent, but they are affectionate with their owners and are happy to cuddle up on the couch with you. However, Chow Chow dogs usually form a bond with one person only, so it is this person that they will choose to be cuddly with; so for this reason, this breed is particularly well suited to a single-person household.
