History of Maine Coon Cats

The history of the Maine Coon cat is shrouded in mystery and legend. While there are many theories that hint at the origin of the Maine Coon cat, no one truly knows how it came to be created. What we do know is that it originated in America in the State of Maine and that this breed is not only one of the largest cat breeds but one of the oldest too. An excellent hunter, this cat is known for withstanding extreme temperatures. Distinctive features include a long fluffy tail, larger ears with Lynx tips and a strong rectangular muzzle. Maine Coons are polydactyl, which means they have extra toes.  Today they make lovable companion cats.

Common Maine Coon Health Issues

What common health issues can you expect to encounter over your Maine Coon’s lifetime?

How Much Grooming Do Maine Coons Need?

One of the most recognisable physical attributes of a Maine Coon cat is its long, double length thick coat. A high shedding breed, they often have tufts of hair in between their foot pads and the tips of their ears. They have luxurious and thick bushy tails, and all of this fur is designed to protect them from the elements. The Maine Coon’s coat is dirt repellent so your pet won’t need regular bathing, but you will need to brush your pet’s coat daily. Luckily for you, this breed love to be bathed and groomed so keeping their coats in immaculate condition is easy.

Just how active are Maine Coons and what mental and physical stimulation do you need to provide as an owner? This breed is playful and has a higher energy level than other breeds but as long as you provide your cat with plenty of toys, this should keep them occupied. They love the outdoors and need regular outdoor play so if you have an escape proof garden, you will have a happy Maine Coon.
