History of Siberian Cats

Siberian cats are native to Siberia, a region in Russia famous for harsh winters. This is reflected in their long, weatherproof coats and very strong bodies. Don’t let their solid and strong build fool you however, as Siberian cats have quite a kittenish attitude.

This particular breed has a high price tag too due to their high demand, plus there’s a relatively low number of purebred Siberian cats that are available outside of Russia.

What to expect when caring for your Siberian Cat

Common Siberian Cat Health Issues

Siberian cats are typically very healthy, but they are not entirely immune to certain health conditions, like the following:

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: this is a condition in which the heart muscle enlarges and becomes less functional

How Much Grooming Do Siberian Cats Need?

Siberian cats have a multi layered coat, yet despite this they only require brushing once or twice a week. This is due to their glossy fur, so they don’t tend to mat or tangle too easily or quickly.

Aside from this, they will need to have their nails trimmed and ears cleaned regularly too.

How Much Exercise Do Siberian Cats Need?

Siberian cats are quite athletic and have big, muscular bodies so they require plenty of exercise. They’re quite playful and active, but they will need regular exercise to maintain their health and bodies.

They’re very intelligent and smart cats that are very easily trained and can pick up games and exercise routines fairly quickly.

  1. Siberian Cat Personality Traits

What to expect from your Siberian Cat

As mentioned above, Siberian cats have quite a kittenish and playful personality. They’re also very affectionate but also quiet and mellow, and the times they do make noise it’s most likely to be a little purr or chirp to express affection or get the attention of their favourite people. Siberian cats also tend to mature and grow quite slowly compared to other cats – it can actually take them as long as five years to reach adulthood. They spend quite a big portion of their life acting like kittens.

  2. Are Siberian Cats Family Friendly?

How will they behave around my family?

Siberian cats are quite a friendly breed that gets on well with pretty much everyone. They’re a wonderful family pet, and get along quite well with everyone, including children and animals. Siberian cats are very sweet natured and affectionate – they’ve often been described as cuddly lap cats who love snuggling and spending one on one time with their favourite people. Siberian cats adore people and don’t like being left alone too long, so they thrive in big family settings surrounded by people.

Siberian Cat FAQs:

Can Siberian cats tolerate warm weather?

Yes – despite their origins in Russia where they have become used to long and harsh winters, Siberian cats fair well in warm climates too and enjoy playing out in the sun.

Why are Siberian cats so famous?

Siberian cats are famous for their long coat of glossy hair. They can also be found in a variety of colours which only adds to their beauty. They’re also hard to find outside of Russia, so their exclusivity only makes them more desirable.

There are a number of common health issues that Siberian Cats are prone to, and as a pet owner it’s worth considering insurance to help protect against unexpected vet bills. Take a look at Asda Money Cat Insurance to see the kind of cover you could get for your cat.
