Vans can be used for personal and business use. If you use yours for both, it can be difficult to know what kind of insurance you need, whether that’s regular (social) van insurance or business van insurance.
You’ll need business van insurance if you use your van for any kind of work-related driving. This includes using your van to carry goods or driving to and from job sites. If you use your van for any kind of work – even if you drive it for personal reasons too – you’ll need a business van insurance policy.
You’ll need social van insurance if you only use your van for driving outside of work, such as taking your kids on a school run, carrying shopping, or transporting gear for a hobby.

Van Insurance FAQs
- Why do I need van insurance?
-
It's illegal to drive in the UK without insuring your van, so if you don’t have insurance then you could end up with expensive fines and points on your driving license. If you got into an accident, you’d also have to pay any compensation costs yourself, without the financial help that insurance provides.
- Can I drive a van on my car insurance?
-
Some car insurance policies will allow you to drive other vehicles, including vans, but you will need to check your policy details first. It’s typically only the case with comprehensive insurance policies, and the cover for other vehicles is usually third party only. If you need van insurance, especially comprehensive van insurance, the best option is often to buy a dedicated van insurance policy.
- How do I compare van insurance quotes through Asda Money?
-

You'll see all your quotes listed, starting with the cheapest first. You’ll also be able to see the specific prices for Comprehensive, Third Party, Fire and Theft and Third Party Only policies, making it easy to find the ideal policy for you.
- Is it cheaper to insure a van?
-
The cost of van insurance can differ according to the size of your van, its engine size, its make and model, and any modifications you make, so it’s difficult to pinpoint whether it’s actually cheaper to insure a van or not. For example, a small van with a relatively low-powered engine could be cheaper to insure than a car with a slightly larger engine.
- Does van insurance cover campervans?
-
Whilst some van insurance policies can cover campervans, most won’t. If you want to drive a campervan on the road in the UK, you’ll usually need to buy dedicated campervan insurance.
- Is it more expensive to cover a business van?
-
Business van insurance is typically more expensive than social van insurance, as vans used for work are usually driven more often and for longer durations. And the more miles covered, the more likely a van is to be involved in an accident. Business vans also often carry expensive goods or gear, further adding to their insurance risk.
- Can you carry a no claims bonus from a car to a van?
-
If your no claims bonus is in your own name, you are able to transfer it from one vehicle to another. However, it can only be transferred to one vehicle at a time, and it’s important to keep in mind that certain conditions may apply such as age restrictions.
- What are the different types of van insurance?
-
Third Party
Third party van insurance is the minimum level of cover you need to legally drive in the UK. Third party insurance covers you for damage or injuries caused to other people, and helps you to pay compensation.
However, this level of cover does not help you pay your own injury costs or to repair or replace your van.
Third Party, Fire and Theft
Third party, fire and theft covers the costs of injury and damage you cause to other people in an accident, but also covers any damage your van suffers from fire, theft, or if your van is stolen.
Third party, fire and theft still doesn’t provide you with any financial help to cover your own costs or losses but does give the added peace of mind that you’ll be protected from fire or theft.
Fully comprehensive
Fully comprehensive van insurance gives you the most complete coverage possible, packaging everything from third party, fire and theft insurance and adding protection for you and your vehicle. Each comprehensive policy is a little different, so it’s worth checking what compensation you’re entitled to in the event of an accident.
Other factors you have to consider when buying van insurance are what you primarily use your van for (personal use, carriage of own good or goods for hire, haulage) and what extras you would be interested in, such as breakdown cover and windscreen repair, which could be included within your van insurance policy.
