The Hungarian Forint (HUF) is the official currency of Hungary and is not accepted as legal tender outside of Hungary.
If you’re ordering Hungarian Forint, keep in mind that it can only be used within Hungary.
Can I use Euros in Hungary?
Yes, some shops, restaurants and other businesses in Hungary accept Euros, but you might get a less favourable exchange rate. You may also receive your change in Forint, which can be confusing.
Smaller businesses, such as bakeries, grocers, and souvenir shops, may not accept Euros at all[1]. That’s why many travellers choose to exchange GBP to HUF before they go, to ensure smooth transactions while abroad.

The Forint (HUF) has been the official currency of Hungary since 1946 and is issued by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (Hungarian National Bank)[2]. It comes in both coins and banknotes, each with distinctive features.

- Should I exchange money before I travel to Hungary?
-
It’s often worth considering exchanging some Pounds for Forint before you travel. This can give you time to compare exchange rates in advance and may help you avoid relying on airport or hotel currency services, which sometimes offer less competitive rates.
Having some local currency on hand when you arrive can also make things easier, especially if you need to pay for transport, tips, or small purchases before finding an ATM or card-friendly location.
- Do I need cash in Budapest?
-
Card payments are widely accepted in Budapest, especially in tourist areas and larger shops. However, some smaller businesses, market stalls, and public transport ticket machines may only accept cash.
- How much cash should I take to Budapest?
-
The amount of Hungarian currency you need for a trip to Budapest depends on how long you’re in the city for, where you plan to stay, the activities you choose, and where you eat out. Budapest is one of Europe’s most affordable capital cities[8], but if you’re on a tight budget, it can help to research costs for meals, transport, accommodation, and activities in advance.
