Taking the family away on holiday is a great idea, full of memorable experiences and opportunities to discover the world together.

But many families often have questions about what their holidays mean for their travel insurance, about who and what is covered, and whether family insurance plans are worth the money.

In this blog, we intend to answer those questions and others to give you a clear picture of who your family insurance plan covers and what the policy you take out can do for you and your loved ones.

What is family cover insurance?

Family cover travel insurance is a form of group travel insurance policy designed to cover your family for when you head off on your travels or on a holiday.

People choose family cover insurance over individual travel insurance for a number of good reasons, but generally, they do so because it’s cheaper and more convenient than tracking down and organising policies for each family member.

It also offers added benefits such as higher levels of cover for lost luggage, cover for a broader range of cancellations and delays, and other extras – so it’s well worth considering if you and your family like to travel or if you’re planning a big trip away.

At Asda Money, we’re proud to offer family travel insurance that can save you even more money, with our up to three kids go free with every adult offer – learn more about our family cover here.

Who’s covered in a family insurance plan?

As its name suggests, the insurance only applies to families which in the eyes of providers normally means it applies to two adults and at least one child under 18 years old from the same address. You can add more children onto the policy.

Whoever you choose for your family travel insurance, be sure to carefully read the policy before making your decision. Some family plans might not include family members who don’t permanently live with you, as well as other considerations. The policy documents of each provider should contain all the information you need to make an informed choice.

Do children need holiday insurance?

Yes, it is highly recommended that you take out a holiday insurance policy for your children. These policies are there to ensure that in the unlikely event that something goes wrong, your kids will have access to medical care that won’t cost the earth thanks to insurance compensation. It can also come in handy for lost luggage – kids can be somewhat more prone to misplace or forget things, so it’s good to have the cost of those items covered to prevent tears and spoilt holidays.

When should I buy family travel insurance?

As soon as you’ve finalised your bookings and got your plans in place, you should buy your travel insurance. From the point of booking, unexpected cancellations or delays could come up at any moment, and you may well regret not having family travel insurance in place for the compensation of those unexpected problems.

What family travel insurance policy should I pick?

Providers often offer different levels of travel insurance policies for families – those different policies offer varying levels of compensation which fit individual budgets and requirements.

With Asda travel insurance, in addition to our up to three kids go free with every adult offer, we have three levels of cover each offering cover for medical, lost luggage, cancellations and more. Each level is designed to give you more for less, with a competitive package that’s just right for you and your family.
