History of Chihuahuas

Small and spirited, the Chihuahua breed can be traced back to the mid-19th century in the Mexican state that it was named after. Many parts of the breed’s history are shrouded in mystery, with a lot of details still up for debate. The Chihuahua is believed to be a descendant of the now-extinct ancient Techichi dog, of which little information is known apart from the fact that this breed of dog was mute. So, what was this breed created for? If we look back through the Chihuahua’s colourful past, we can see that they were once bred for religious purposes, with the belief that this dog was a guide in the afterlife. Today they are bred to be a companion dog, and with their loyal and loving personas, it’s no surprise why.

What to expect when caring for your Chihuahua

Common Chihuahua Health Issues

Should you be aware of any genetic health risks when owning a Chihuahua?

Luxating Patellas – Chihuahuas are prone to this condition, and it involves the kneecaps dislocating out of their normal position.

Hydrocephalus – Chihuahuas are predisposed to this condition which involves a build-up of fluid that causes pressure on the brain.

Entropion – This is an eye problem that involves the eyelid rolling inward causing pain and irritation.

How Much Chihuahuas Need?

As a Chihuahua owner, what can you expect in terms of regular maintenance? The amount of grooming required will depend on whether your pet has a long or a short coat. This breed falls into the light to medium shedding category, but this simply means that regular brushing is required to keep your pet’s coat free of tangles.

How Much Exercise do Chihuahuas Need?

Chihuahuas are relatively low maintenance in all areas of life, and exercise is no exception. They require no more than 20 minutes of exercise each day which can be a quick walk around the block or a run around the backyard.

  1. Personality Traits of a Chihuahua

What to expect from your Chihuahua

Easy to love and even easier to live with, Chihuahuas are a small dog lover’s dream. This purebred dog falls into the ‘toy’ category and is in fact the smallest dog in the world, but what this breed lacks in size, it makes up for in personality. Chihuahuas are notoriously expressive and entertaining, and each one is truly unique. The temperament of a Chihuahua rests heavily upon the parents as some are lively and eccentric, and some are timid and placid. Loyalty is a common theme with this breed and once you own a Chihuahua, you have a friend for life.

  2. Are Chihuahuas Family Friendly?

How will they behave around my family?

While Chihuahuas make wonderful pets, they are better suited to households without children as their personality borders on feisty, and they can be easily provoked, especially by boisterous toddlers. Their size also makes them extremely fragile. While they are a loyal and lovable breed, they have a tendency to be snappy, and for this reason, the best environment is a quiet, child-free home.

Chihuahua FAQs:

Do Chihuahuas Bark a Lot?

Chihuahuas are a vocal breed but they don’t bark excessively without cause. If your Chihuahua is barking, it’s because they are feeling threatened or afraid in their environment. While this is a sassy breed that knows how to stand up for itself, a Chihuahua can be trained from a young age not to bark excessively. The temperament of this breed can vary dramatically, so how much your pet barks will, of course, depend on this.

Do Chihuahuas Make Good Pets?

Yes, as long as you spend a lot of time at home or are willing to have your pet accompany you where you need to go as this breed does not cope well with long periods of alone time.  They become extremely attached to their owners and will adapt to family life well on the condition that they can accompany you wherever you go. They love nothing more than to be by your side, and so if it’s a loving companion you desire, this breed is the right one for you.

Are Chihuahuas Intelligent?

Chihuahuas aren’t among the cleverest breeds, but they are intelligent and this is shown in their ability to be trained easily.
