  4. Other types of pet insurance

There are other types of policies available that Asda Pet Insurance do not currently provide, but might be right for you, including:
Maximum benefit: Covers each injury or illness up to a certain financial limit. The limit doesn’t reset like annual policies, meaning you can claim for the same condition until the specific limit is reached.
Accident only: To assist with the expenses if your pet is involved in an accident. It doesn’t cover your pet falling ill.

What does pet insurance cover?

All pet insurance policies are different, but they will usually cover:

  • Vet fees and treatment for illness or injury
  • Alternative treatments including physiotherapy or homeopathy
  • Emergency dental treatment after an accident
  • Compensation if your pet dies or goes missing
  • Third-party cover if your dog injures someone or damages property

In most instances, pet insurance typically won’t cover:

  • Routine medical treatments like check-ups or flea and worming
  • Vaccinations and boosters
  • Neutering or spaying
  • Microchipping
  • Euthanasia

See our guide on pet insurance exclusions for more information on what isn’t included in most pet insurance policies.

How much does pet insurance cost?

The cost of pet insurance can vary widely, depending on several factors. One of the biggest influences is your pet’s age – insuring an older dog, for example, is usually more expensive than insuring a puppy. Other factors include whether your pet has been spayed or neutered, as unneutered pets may be more prone to certain health issues later in life.

The type of policy and level of cover you choose will also affect the price. For instance, lifetime cover typically costs more than a basic accident-only policy, but it offers more comprehensive protection.

Tips for getting cheaper pet insurance

Here are a few ways you may be able to reduce the cost of your pet insurance:

  • Keep your pet healthy: A healthy pet is less likely to need treatment, which can help keep your insurance premiums lower. Regular exercise, a good diet, and routine vet checkups all play a part.

  • Stay up to date with vaccinations and boosters: If your pet becomes ill from a preventable disease, it could invalidate your policy.

  • Consider a higher excess: Choosing a higher voluntary excess (the amount you pay towards a claim) may help reduce your monthly or annual premium.

  • Neuter or spay your pet: Neutered pets are generally less prone to certain health issues, which can make them cheaper to insure.

  • Choose your breed carefully: Some pedigree breeds are more likely to suffer from inherited health conditions, which can drive up the cost of insurance.
