Should I buy Chilean pesos now or wait?

We recommend changing your British pounds to Chilean pesos before you travel to make sure you’ll get the best chance at a competitive exchange rate and to ensure it’s already done before you land.

Although you can change money in Chile and withdraw cash using your UK bank cards, this will involve converting Chilean pesos back into pounds. You’re unlikely to be given a competitive exchange rate, and you may also have to pay transaction fees for using your cards abroad.

Changing your money before you leave home also means you can focus on your trip rather than having to search around for somewhere to exchange your money.

What countries use Chilean pesos?

Common Chilean peso Questions

How many Chilean pesos to a pound?

£1 equals around 1,124 Chilean pesos*.

*Rates taken from Asda foreign exchange calculator. At time of publishing – October 2024. For the most up to date exchange rate, please see our calculator at the top of the page.

Should I tip in Chile?

Tipping isn’t necessarily expected in Chile, but it is common. It’s usual to tip people performing a service for you, like tour guides, porters, bellmen, and restaurant and bar staff. A 10% tip is common in bars and restaurants [8].

Is cash or card better in Chile?

Whilst UK bank cards are commonly accepted in Chile, you may be charged a fee by the business you’re using. Your bank may also charge you a foreign transaction fee. We recommend paying in Chilean peso cash where you can, to avoid any additional fees.

Why does Chile have two currencies?

Chile’s national currency is the Chilean peso. Chile also uses a special, non-circulating currency called the Unidad de Fomento [9]. This is usually for paying international loans and for some forms of investment. As a tourist, you won’t have to deal with the Unidad de Fomento, and you’ll only ever use Chilean pesos.
