Should I buy Jamaican Dollars now or wait?

We recommend exchanging pounds for Jamaican dollars before you leave the UK. The exchange rates you’ll be offered in Jamaica may not be as good as the ones you can get here.

Although you can withdraw Jamaican dollar cash at most ATMs in Jamaica with your British bank cards, you likely won’t be given a competitive exchange rate. You may also be charged additional transaction fees.

If you use your bank cards to pay at businesses in Jamaica, you’ll likely be given a poorer exchange rate, and you may have to pay an additional foreign currency transaction fee. Having Jamaican dollars in your wallet also ensures you can pay if your cards aren’t accepted.

Sorting out your Jamaican dollars with Asda Travel Money before you leave means you’ll be sure to get a competitive exchange rate. Plus, you’ll travel safe in the knowledge that you’ve already got the foreign currency you’ll need.

Common Jamaican Dollar Questions

Is Jamaica expensive for tourists?

Prices will vary throughout Jamaica, but it’s generally a reasonably cheap destination for British tourists [8], especially if the pound is strong against the Jamaican dollar. Although some restaurants and five-star resorts can be very expensive.

Is it better to exchange money in Jamaica?

You’re more likely to get a competitive exchange rate if you change pounds for Jamaican dollars before leaving the UK. Sorting your Jamaican dollars before you leave also means it’s a job done and you’ll land in Jamaica with the right currency already in your pocket.

Is it better to use US dollars in Jamaica?

Whilst you may be able to use US dollars in some locations in Jamaica, we recommend travelling with Jamaican dollars. If you pay with US dollars, you’ll likely be given change in Jamaican dollars and probably at a poor exchange rate. Having Jamaican dollars means you won’t have to worry about rates of exchange and whether you’ll be able to pay.

Can you use a debit card in Jamaica?

UK debit cards are accepted by many businesses throughout Jamaica. However, check with your bank to make sure you can use your cards abroad and whether you’ll be charged a non-sterling transaction fee for doing so. It may be cheaper to exchange pounds for Jamaican dollars before you leave home.
