Should I buy Chinese Yuan now or wait?

Just like organising travel insurance, it’s a good idea to exchange your pounds to Chinese Yuan before you leave home.

If you wait to exchange your pounds when you arrive in China, you might not get as competitive an exchange rate as you would at home.

You may be able to withdraw Chinese Yuan from ATMs using your bank cards, and many places in China will accept debit and credit cards. However, withdrawing cash directly from your UK bank account or using your cards abroad, will usually mean you’re charged additional fees. Having Yuan on hand avoids these fees and guarantees you’ll be able to pay for your goods.

Organising your Yuan before you travel also means you won’t have to spend time searching for an exchange bureau in China. You can focus on your holiday, knowing that your travel currency is already covered.

What countries use Chinese Yuan?

Officially called the Renminbi (RMB) which translates as the "people's currency", the Chinese yuan (CNY) is the official currency of the People's Republic of China [1] and is used throughout the country.

Common Yuan Questions

Are Chinese Yuan and RMB the same?

Yes, they are. The Chinese Yuan (CNY) and the Renminbi (RMB) are two names for the same currency. Renminbi means "people's currency” and is the official name for China’s currency. It’s more commonly known as the Chinese Yuan, which is actually the name of the main denomination of the currency [9].

Can you buy Chinese Yuan in the UK?

Yes, you can. Whilst some currencies can’t be bought and sold abroad, the Chinese Yuan can be. You can buy Chinese Yuan in the UK at most travel money providers, including Asda Money (subject to availability).

How much is 1 GBP to 1 Yuan?

Currently, £1 is worth approximately 8.7 CNY*.

Why does China have two currencies?

You may see two different currencies written for China, the Chinese Yuan (CNY) and the Renminbi (RMB). They’re actually the same currency, and these are two alternate names for them. The Renminbi is the official name for China’s currency, but it’s more commonly known as the Chinese Yuan – which is actually the name of the main denomination of the currency (the Renminbi is made up of Yuan, Jiao, and Fen).

Why is Chinese Yuan cheap?

The Chinese Yuan is cheaper than other currencies, like the Pound, Euro, and the US Dollar, because China works to keep it that way. China’s central bank carefully manages the value of the Yuan to keep it cheaper than many other currencies to help keep Chinese exports competitively priced [10].
