It’s a good idea to have a basic understanding of Canada’s currency before your trip. Here’s what you need to know:
Canadian banknotes are available in $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 dollar denominations.
The banknotes in Canada are hard to miss. The locals pride themselves on their brightly coloured notes which make the traditional green and white dollar bills from the US seem pretty dull.
The Canadian government has replaced $1 and $2 notes with metal coins which the locals call ‘loonies’ and ‘toonies’.
Canadian coins include 25¢ quarter, 10¢ dime, l, and 1¢ pennies, 5¢ nickels, 10¢ dime, 25¢ quarters, $1 loonies, and $2 toonies.
In 2014, 1¢ pennies were phased out by rounding off prices to the nearest nickel.
However, it's up to the retailers to decide whether they accept USD. But, you should always bring plenty of Canadian Dollars to be safe.
